Webinar: Using the Power of Procurement to Change the Food System

This webinar will explore how institutional purchasing power can be used to increase wealth in rural and urban areas by creating a transparent and equitable food purchasing program. The Good Food Purchasing Program will be discussed in terms of its values-based procurement practices and standards, focused on five value areas: local economies, environmental policies, valued workforce, animal welfare and nutrition.  The local economies pillar will be discussed in relationship to a CSU Food Systems Initiative project to create rural-urban linkages using five crops: peaches, corn, beef, wheat and potatoes. The presentation will conclude with how the City of Denver is exploring the GFPP through developing baselines assessments, pursuing policy initiatives, and recommending language changes to food procurement contracts.
