National Young Farmers Coalition – Water Organizer

The National Young Farmers Coalition seeks an experienced organizer to join us in the newly-created role of Water Organizer. The Water Organizer is a remote, part-time position and will be a central part of our national water campaign team, reporting to the Water Director.

Our national water campaign is a new campaign for Young Farmers, and an evolution of our water advocacy within the Colorado River Basin. As an emerging campaign, we will focus on building water leadership within our network, supporting our members to engage in water policy, and advocating for Farm Bill changes to support young farmers’ on-farm water use. The Water Organizer will collaborate closely with the water campaign team and the Field Director to ensure that our staff and farmers throughout our network are fluent in our water campaign goals, trained in our campaign strategies, and inspired to participate in and lead campaign advocacy actions. The Water Organizer will lead on planning, logistics, and materials support for water campaign advocacy actions and an educational advocacy training series. The Organizer will also work with the water team to build strong relationships with potential coalition partners, prioritizing partnerships with organizations engaged in water policy from an environmental justice perspective.

Responsibilities

Project & Program Strategy

*       Develop and lead the organizing strategy for the water campaign.
*       Collaborate closely with the water team, as well the Field Director, to ensure that organizers and producers throughout our network are fluent in water campaign goals, strategies, and actions.
*       Lead on planning, logistics, and materials support for water campaign advocacy actions including in-districts, days of action, letter writing campaigns, etc.
*       Design, plan, and coordinate rollout of a water educational series to inform producers in our network of the campaign and educate them on federal water policy issues, with an emphasis on the Colorado River Basin.
*       Work with our members to identify water policy needs and provide individual support for members advocating for water policy change.

Development

*       Collaborate with the Water Director and the Development Team to meet development needs for the water campaign team.

Stakeholder Engagement

*       Collaborate with the Water Director in engaging with partners, in alignment with our strategic plan and with the Water Campaign goals.

Budget Management

*       Responsible for the educational advocacy series budget.

Qualifications & Competencies

*       2+ years of professional organizing experience
*       Experience leading advocacy and grassroots organizing spaces
*       Long running, demonstrated commitment to racial equity, a passion for our mission, and a record of service to making structural change and challenging accepted practices and norms
*       Ability to communicate policies and advocacy concepts to a young farmer audience;
*       Highly organized with strong time management skills and ability to prioritize based on organizational mission and goals
*       Understanding of racial equity as a socio-political priority and as a lens for policy and advocacy

Additionally, the ideal candidate will:

*       Hold lived experience as a farmer
*       Speak an additional language to English
*       Experience with digital organizing strategies and/or tools
*       Experience organizing as part of a Farm Bill or other federal policy campaign
*       Live in the Western U.S.

Compensation and Schedule

*       Young Farmers’ salaries are determined by annually revised salary guidelines. The salary for this role is $31.01/hour, and is a Manager level position according to our 2022 Salary Guidelines.
*       Young Farmers offers a competitive benefits package, including health and dental insurance, retirement matching, generous paid time off, and paid family leave.
*       Part-time schedule, typically 20-30 hours per week with a flexible schedule.
